How does a reverse osmosis water filter work?

Reverse osmosis is a membrane separation process that uses a pressure difference as the driving force to separate the solvent from a solution. When pressure is applied to the feed solution on one side of the membrane and exceeds its osmotic pressure, the solvent flows in the opposite direction of natural osmosis.

What are the functions and applications of a reverse osmosis water filter?
  • Function: It efficiently removes dissolved substances from water, such as salts, heavy metals, organic compounds, suspended solids, microorganisms, bacteria, and viruses, ensuring water safety.

What pretreatment equipment is required for a reverse osmosis water filter?

  2. Reverse Osmosis Membrane/Membrane Element: The core filtration component of the system, featuring extremely fine pores that can retain dissolved salts, heavy metals, microorganisms, and other contaminants. It determines the quality of the produced water.
  3. Membrane Housing: A pressure-resistant cylindrical housing used to contain RO membrane elements. Typically made of fiberglass or stainless steel, it can accommodate a single or multiple membrane elements installed in series.

What harm does residual chlorine cause to RO membranes? How can it be removed?

Residual chlorine is a strong oxidizing agent that can damage the structure of polyamide composite membranes, leading to membrane degradation, reduced desalination rate, membrane embrittlement and rupture, and irreversible damage to the membrane elements. Removal methods: Pre-installed activated carbon filters or the addition of sodium bisulfite as a reducing agent.

Key Points for Winter Operation and Maintenance of Reverse Osmosis Systems

Membrane Maintenance During System Operation:

  1. The ambient temperature of the reverse osmosis system should be above 5°C.
  2. Increase the feedwater temperature or feedwater pressure.
  3. When the raw water temperature is below 10°C, it is recommended to use a raw water heater to heat the raw water to 20–25°C.

Membrane Maintenance During System Shutdown:

  1. Maintain temperatures between 5–45°C
  2. Low temperatures are beneficial for membrane element preservation, but system freezing must be prevented

Winter Maintenance of Reverse Osmosis Equipment:

  1. For indoor installations, ensure the room temperature remains above 5°C; provide heating to the equipment if necessary
  2. Heat the system to 20–25°C
  3. If the feed pipe freezes, preventing water supply or resulting in low flow, do not force the reverse osmosis system to start. Strictly adhere to the feed water requirements for reverse osmosis membrane elements and never apply pressure indiscriminately.
  4. For outdoor installations, frost protection measures must be in place. When temperatures drop below 0°C, cease operation of the water treatment equipment.
